Royalty Quiz Answers (Sept 15)

Written by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and Marguerite Kaye

1 Start with an easy one. What is the royal title of the debut best-selling novel with a by Candice Carty-Williams?

 Answer:: Queenie

2 Who wrote the children’s short story, The Happy Prince?

Answer:: Oscar Wilde.

3 Who wrote the fictionalised series of Queen Victoria, which started with The Captive of Kensington Palace?

 Answer:: Jean Plaidy. Other books in the series were:

·      The Queen and Lord M

·      The Queen’s Husband

·      The Widow of Windsor.

Queen Victoria plays a key role in our book Her Heart for a Compass. One of our favourite facts, which we turned up in the diaries was the fact that she always had two cups at tea, to pour one into the other in order to cool it down, and she liked to dunk her biscuits.

She was also a big cake lover. We also found some of the recipes from one of her chefs, Charles Elme Francatelli. So we wrote a whole scene set in Marlborough House of a tea party with the queen, the Duchess of Buccleuch, Princess Alexandra, Lady Margaret and Princess Louise just to include these things.

4 Follow on question from 3, can you name any of Jean Plaidy’s other pseudonyms?

 Answer:: Victoria Holt (gothic romance) and Philippa Carr (saga, most famous being The Daughters of England).

 Real name was Eleanor Alice Burford. She also wrote thrillers, murder mysteries and light romances under five other names. She wrote over 200 books. The latter day Norah Roberts!

5 Georgette Heyer question now – had to do it! What is the title of the book where the heroine, Judith, has fainted, and wakes up finding herself in a compromising position in Brighton Pavilion with George, Prinny?

 Answer:: Regency Buck (and please let’s all forgot the fact that Julia thought she was saying Regency Book)

6 Which Scottish novelist was the mastermind behind the tartan-fest in Edinburgh to celebrate the visit of King George IV?

 Answer: Walter Scott

 The King’s Jaunt, 1822, was the first visit to Scotland of a monarch since Charles II nearly 200 years before. The city sold out of tartan!

 Marguerite’s book, A Forbidden Liaison with Miss Grant, is set during the visit.

 The king’s kilt was too short so he famously wore a pair of pink tights underneath it. They had a banquet with ‘traditional’ food which included sheep heid broth and hodge podge, a stew made from neck of lamb, served in an ale and barley broth with seasonal vegetables. Crappit heid, cod’s head, stuffed with oats and a bit of suet.

Walter Scott is relative of the Duchess. In opening scene of A Most Intriguing Lady, it is from the banquet to celebrate his centenary that our heroine leaves to walk the parapet of Drumlanrig Castle.

 The picture of Sarah and Marguerite in the banner for the podcast was taken at Dalkeith Palace, the Edinburgh residence of the Buccleuch family at the centre of both our books. The 5th Duke of Buccleuch (Sarah’s Great Great Great Grandfather), the patriarch in our books, was a child when George IV came to Edinburgh. George didn’t fancy Holyrood Palace, which was very run down, so the Duke of Buccleuch’s uncle and guardian moved the family to an Edinburgh hotel and the king moved in.

7 And now a question from Sarah. Who is the ‘Accidental Empress in the novel by Allison Pataki?

Answer: Elisabeth, “Sisi,” Duchess of Bavaria.

This is one of Sarah’s favourite books. Sisi goes to the Habsburg Court of the Emperor Franz Joseph with her elder sister, who is betrothed to them. But he falls for Sisi and marries her instead. Sisi is a titian haired-rebel, a superb horse-woman with a very definite mind of her own!

Other book in the series is Sisi: Empress on her own.

8 Second question from Sarah about another of her favourite books. In Anya Seton’s book Katherine, about Katherine Swynford, who is her famous Brother-in-law?

Answer: Chaucer

 Katherine tells the true story of Katherine de Roet, born the daughter of a minor Flemish herald, later knight. Katherine has no obvious prospects, except that her sister is a waiting-woman to Queen Philippa, wife of King Edward III, and betrothed to (later the wife of) Geoffrey Chaucer, then a minor court official.

Katherine was a strong woman of her time, mistress of her husband’s estate whilst he was away at war.

9 At the heart of the first of Hilary Mantel’s novel Wolf Hall is the political Battle to put Anne Boleyn on the throne. Can you name all six of Henry’s wives in order?

Answer::
Catherine of Aragon

Anne Boleyn

Jane Seymour

Anne of Cleeves

Kathryn Howard

Catherine Parr

10 What is the title of Rose Tremain’s first novel featuring Robert Merivel?

Answer:: Restoration.
